Alexander McQueen

What Was I Thinking:

When I was assigned this assignment, my mind automatically went to all these dark colors, extravagant outfits, and beautifully scary women, while touching that line of artistic and offensive. Much to my surprise, our professor assigned us a type of material we had to incorporate into our shoot. Mine happened to be wire. Can you imagine how like “wtf” I was? I wanted to get gauze or like something that’s linked to dark and gritty uses. Wire was the last thing I thought I’d have. So, what were my first prop ideas? A friggn halo! (DUH!) Then that’s where I got my main source of inspiration. I went with the halo idea and R A N with it and did more headpieces. Luckily I have a fantastic friend named Jordan, that’s just amazing with DIY projects and a hot glue gun (which wasn’t used for once lol). We got to work on making five different pieces for this assignment for five completely different outfits. My professor hates us lmao.

Moodboard and Inspiration:

Doing this assignment I HAD to do a mood board so I can get myself together and see everything together as much as I could. So a little back story, this class is HARD! This was the first fashion assignment and I was amped! I felt my idea was solid and coming together so well that the mood board was gonna be a breeze… man was I stupid thinking that. That mood board took 7 total hours from saving pictures, doing a color palette, and arranging all the pictures. My past assignments were not the best so I was determined to make this one the best so far. I was detailed down to the nail color of the models. (Yes. I got a critique on that on a different assignment so I was paranoid.)

I was inspired by Lady Gaga’s “Judas” music video for this. She was one of the most prominent figures to introduce me to Alexander McQueen so it seemed fitting.

I love making mood boards, but this was… Whew chile, was a looooot. Worth it though. Eight pages later…

The Lookbook and What I Used:

Equipment: Canon 5D Mk III and a Canon 24-105 f 4
Lighting: Two Einstein strobes with one small and one large Paul C Buff softbox (my basic setup).
Background: Savage seamless paper in Crimson 107” x 12yds.

We had the added fact of doing a lookbook as well. I wanted this to go pretty simple and not waste time on it. My sole focus was on the editorial portion of this shoot. The lookbook just required a front and back view of the outfits, and I had the models have on the base of the makeup to save all the excitement for the editorial.
